The Witch (20th Anniversary)
The Witch has been with me for twenty years. I first wrote it in October 2005, as I was preparing to move from Kalamazoo, MI to Chicago, IL - excited for what lay ahead but wistful for what I was leaving behind. Born out of longing and the ache of not having what you want, the song has taken on many forms over the years. It appeared in 2008 on Heavier Than Heaven’s Grey When Black Will Do - my band with Nicholas Davio - and again in 2015 as a solo version to mark its tenth anniversary.
Now, two decades later, I’ve revisited it once more. This version brings me back closer to the original acoustic guitar and bare vocals, but with a special addition: my sister, Jenn Reid, who composed and performed the violin parts. Her playing gives the song a haunting new depth while keeping its roots intact. Even after all this time, it still feels fresh to me, and I hope it does for you too.
