happy new year!

Sunday, January 22nd, 2012
It has been a long time! So I am going to get right to it.

I have created a new entity named bad.land. This isn’t just a name; bad.land. is a community of musicians, artists, dancer, and other soul-enriching spirits coming together to embark on a journey and instill a sense of connection.

The frist to be featured in the bad.land. community is my good friend and amazing musician, Fiddle Dave. Our track,
Cosmic Reset, is super gritty and grooving.  Check it out here, and share it around!

In the coming year, I am super excited about my brother and talented video artist, Jake Durrett, moving to San Francisco to join the bad.land. cause. And, I am still working with Nick Davio and hypermodal cross-country as well, we recently finished a new track titled A Little Fail that you can hear as well.

And last, but not least, I am still writing songs and playing guitar. This is of course where all of this began. I have been looking to scale back a bit and focus on recording some more intimate and emotional sounds. Here is my first attempt, A Message to Me.

I hope the new year is treating you well. You inspire me.

A demo of a new song.

a message to me by Daniel Durrett

i didn’t mean to say all the things i said
i didn’t mean to end it so we can’t remember when we began
skipping lightly through the winter breeze
i didn’t mean to break out
i didn’t mean to scream
i didn’t mean to make you feel like you couldn’t be
i didn’t mean to shout
i didn’t mean to cry
i didn’t mean to make you feel like you had to lie
but i know
despite how dark it’s been
the sun will shine on you again

poison ivy doesn’t start to itch
until it’s been a while since you’ve come in contact with it
poison ivy lurks beneath our kiss
only because
i’m missing it

i didn’t mean to question your courage and intent
i didn’t mean to crush you with all the evidence
shattering
what little time we had left
i didn’t mean to scare you
i wish i could have spared you
from all the intense feelings of regret
but i know
despite where you’ve been
it’s good to see your face again

Wasting Our Minds – Live Video

Monday, July 12th, 2010

As I prepare for my upcoming shows this summer, I have been working on bringing what I do in the studio (playing multiple instruments) to the stage. Obviously, I can’t do it all at the same time, so I am using what is called “looping” to achieve a wall of sound. I can record and play loops using a foot pedal so that my hands are free to play guitar/keyboards/percussion.

Here is a video of my song Wasting Our Minds – Live in my studio.

Remastered: Letum

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

As I move forward with my musical journey, I find myself looking back at some of my old music. I am digging through my back catalog and remastering some of my past projects so I can re-release them all to you.

Some of the tracks I wish I could remix all together, but a lot of this was done before I had the means to buy backup drives and such, so the original session files are all gone. But that is OK – I think this is better anyway – I can’t change it. I just have to let it live the way I originally intended.

So, to mark the anniversary of the day the music died, I am releasing a remastered 3 part requiem from 2005 titled letum.

This is an instrumental piece that sits heavily on the ambient/electronic/orchestral boundaries. This is not intended to be uplifting by any means – it is a requiem, which webster-merriam defines as a musical composition in honor of the dead.

You can find it at the Daniel Durrett store. And, you can name your price – no minimum!

This is for my father.
